Have you thought about what you will do when you retire? What does retirement mean to you anyway? Some look forward to moving away from something they have done for years and often haven’t enjoyed doing for a long time. Others eagerly and happily look forward to the day they can finally do whatever they want. Some know what this is, most don’t and if they do, it is a vague notion that often includes doing more of the things they have enjoyed doing throughout their lives.
Having worked with many people thinking about retirement, I propose that we invent a new word for retirement because retirement for many baby boomers is not what it has been in the past and certainly not what many people want. According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of retirement is “withdrawal from one’s position or occupation or from active working life.” Dictionary.com defines retirement as “the act of leaving one’s job, career, or occupation permanently, usually because of age.” I don’t know about you, but my idea of retirement is a rich, full life that does include work but work that I choose which aligns with my personal values and goals for this time in my life.
It’s time to craft your retirement.
Create a plan for the next best phase of your life
Recognize your value
Ask questions about possibilities
Transform the way you think about retirement
Many people “fail” in retirement. Don’t let that be you!
